DMEDI vs DMAIC Methodology in Six Sigma

DMEDI Methodology in Six Sigma

→ It refers to the steps such as Define, Measure, Explore, Develop, Implement
→ This Methodology is a data and statistic drove and creative approach for designing new processes, products, and services.
→ The roadmap of this method is focused on obtaining significant competitive advantages or breakthrough changes over the current position.
→ Projects of this methodology take more resources and time as compared to the DMAIC projects.
→ This method is based on data gathering to design a new process or product or improve the design of the existing process or product.

DMAIC Methodology

→ It refers to the steps such as Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control
→ This is an analytical, data-driven approach used to eliminate wastes or improve existing processes, products, and services to meet customer’s expectations.
→ This methodology focuses on incremental improvements like reducing variation and reducing defects.

Why DMEDI?

→ Too often projects fail unnecessarily because the system designed to implement them was not properly organized from the beginning.
→ This method of Six Sigma can be especially effective in eliminating this type of problem, so we can use this methodology for a new design of process, product, and service.
→ You can easily show the comparison in the below picture.

DMEDI vs DMAIC

➨ Examples of DMEDI:
⇢ Design new manufacturing assembly process
⇢ Re-design infrastructure from gasoline filling   station to an electric charging station
⇢ Develop new database for storing large data storing

➨ Examples of DMAIC:
⇢ Reduce manufacturing assembly cycle time
⇢ Improve vehicle fuel efficiency by 25%
     ⇢ Eliminate server crash error

Five Steps of DMEDI Methodology:

Five Steps of DMEDI Method

[1] Design Phase:

→ This stage is similar to the Define stage of the DMAIC Method.
→ In this, Stakeholders come up with the project scope or we can say that this is the beginning of any project.
→ According to the Six Sigma DMEDI_Method,  nature, and scope of project, internal and external customers, financial benefits, and business growth is decided in this stage.
→ Without a clear understanding of the project’s scope and an outcome, we can’t successfully run the project.

[2] Measure Phase:

→ This is focussed on obtaining as many clients and stakeholder input as possible.
→ However, the principles of Six Sigma dictate that in order to be truly effective, project management metrics must be quantifiable, understandable, and valuable to the customer.
→ The measuring stage requires more input in this method as compared to the measure phase of DMAIC.
→ The input may be in this stage is,
     ⇢ Existing process definition,
     ⇢ Baseline outputs,
     ⇢ Critical customer requirements (CCR),
     ⇢ Quality function deployment (QFD)

[3] Explore Phase:

→ After the Define and Measure stage of DMEDI, the next is the Explore phase.
→ This is different from the Analyze stage of the DMAIC method of Six Sigma.
→ This focuses on delivering a hypothetical design of the new process.
→ It is related to how the final product will look like.
→ In this, the organization or project leader should discover new and innovative ideas to meet the requirements decided in the Define step.
→ While the Analyze step of DMAIC focuses on the data of an existing process to identify the defect and root causes.

[4] Develop Phase:

→ Develop phase of this method focuses on the best way for the continued development of the product, process or service.
→ At this stage, we must develop a robust plan for achieving goals or objectives.
→ This plan must include all the basic as well advanced requirements related to the project like planning of manpower, designing of all facilities and other physical resources, supplier development, required technology including software and hardware, etc.…
→ All this requirement will have an impact on the budget so, during this stage, it is necessary to compare and monitor all expenses vs achieved goals.

[5] Implement Phase:

→ Usually, we can see the result of project completion in the implementation phase of DMEDI.
→ Once all the earlier steps in this method have been successfully carried out then it is time to implement the planned_project.
→ A sample trial run may be relevant in the Implement step to ensure that each element of the_project works as planned.
→ In this stage, the design is validated by trial and testing on a small scale.
→ Then establish appropriate controls on that product or process.
→ Then finally full-scale implementation takes place.

Benefits of DMEDI Methodology:

→ By applying this technique, a company can greatly improve productivity as well as cut down on unnecessary costs.
→ It is also a great tool to design new products, processes, and services.
→ We can use this tool in any sector of the business world.
→ The best quality performance we can get as compared to other techniques.
→ Customer satisfaction.
→ Increasing your profits and minimizing your defect rates.
